GDT Juniors is a new type of activity club for primary school aged children (5 to 11 years old) which runs after school times and is all about dogs!
At GDT Juniors your child can spend quality time with their own dog or other friendly, well behaved dogs (your child may be able to 'borrow' one of our temperament-assessed chihuahuas during the session if they do not have their own dog)! Your child will be taught important lessons about topics such as staying safe around dogs, reading dog body language and how to interact with their dog appropriately - as well as having fun learning how to become a 'junior dog trainer' - this means that grown-ups and dogs might learn a few things too!
Studies show that spending time around dogs reduces stress levels and can improve children's rate of learning (Alfrey, A, 2021), as well as a range of other benefits including an increased self-esteem, higher levels of compassion, a better understanding of communication (including through body language) and best of all - an identifiable increase in pure happiness (AKC, 2022)!
During every GDT Juniors session we will:
• Have a child and dog friendly introduction.
• Around 15 minutes of 'teaching time'.
• Around 15 minutes of 'practical time' with resources for children and their dogs to play and interact with.
• Wind down time to go over what we have learnt and give awards to the 'Dog of the Week' and 'Junior Trainer of the Week'.
GDT Juniors will run during term time and we will usually have a seasonally themed 'party' at the end of each term, so keep an eye out for announcements of those on our social media pages!
Venue
GDT Juniors will be held at Christ Church Hall in Seaham.
There is on site parking available (permission has been granted to us by the vicar to drive into the church grounds in order to park right outside the hall instead of on the street).
The venue is also fully accessible, with on site toilet facilities.
